Since 1972, Mary Tompkins Chappell has coached girls sports dynasties in soccer and volleyball at Marcellus (N.Y.) High School. In soccer, Chappell's teams have a 294-41-16 record, including 15 league titles, 12 sectional crowns, four trips to the state finals, and the 1989 state championship.
Meanwhile, Chappell's volleyball teams have posted a 306-64 mark that includes eight conference titles, four sectional crowns and a regional championship. In five years, she also directed the boys tennis teams to a league title.
While at Cortland, she was president of Arethusa Sorority and competed in soccer, field hockey, basketball and volleyball. She taught and coached in Hamilton, N.Y., and Phelps, N.Y., before taking a leave of absence to raise her two sons. A teacher for more than 28 years, Chappell has been listed in "Who's Who Among America's Teachers."
UPDATE: Chappell passed away on June 2, 2015, at the age of 78.
