Robert Springer graduated from the Homer Academy in 1938 and from Cortland in 1943. Excelling in athletics while at Cortland, he was selected as goalkeeper to the All-American Soccer Team. In 1951, he received his master's degree at Cortland. He also played baseball for two seasons and was a men's basketball team manager.
A long and distinguished coaching career began in Cincinnatus in 1943, when coaching all sports was the norm. In addition to his 36 years as athletic director, his coaching records included 245 and 110 in baseball with 9 league championships, 177 and 110 in basketball, and 251 and 66 in soccer with 13 league championships, 5 sectional championships and an undefeated 1972 season.
Springer is a member of the NYS Section IV and Cortland C-Club Hall of Fame. Other awards and duties included president of Cortland County Teachers Association, secretary-treasurer of Cortland County Athletic League, Inter Scholastic Athletic Association, president and soccer chairman of Section IV Athletic Council, member of NYS High School Association, chairman of NYS Soccer Committee, chairman of the National Federation Soccer Committee, member of the National Soccer Coaches Association, and charter member of the National Intercollegiate Soccer Officials.
Additionally he organized and began the Cortland County and Southern Tier Chapters of Soccer Officials. Springer also officiated many NCAA Soccer playoffs and championships. Springer's community activities included: member of the Cincinnatus Methodist Church; past master of Cincinnatus F&M Lodge 706; andĀ fire commissioner and organizer of the Cincinnatus Emergency Squad. He established the first Little League program in Cortland County and was chairman of the Cincinnatus Recreation Program for 25 years, serving also as chairman of fund raising and building committee for the Cincinnatus community pool. For five years, Springer chaired the Cincinnatus Fourth of July celebration. In 1946, Springer married Ruth C. Jennison of Homer.
