S.M. "Dutch" Craumer, an All-American football player at Cortland in the 1940's, has distinguished himself in his professional career as an educator, administrator and a longtime civic-minded contributor both in his native Corning, N.Y., and throughout the state. An All-Country quarterback, multi-sport athlete and class president at Corning Free Academy, Craumer served three years in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II before enrolling at Cortland State Teachers College in the summer of 1946.
As a halfback on Coach Carl "Chugger" Davis' football squad, Craumer set school records by scoring six touchdowns in a game and by punting the ball 85 yards from scrimmage. He played three seasons of football and competed one season in track and field, and he was an officer in Beta Phi Epsilon fraternity on campus. Craumer earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees from Cortland. He later earned a doctorate from the National Christian University in Dallas, Texas.
He taught physical education and health and was a coach first at Corning Free Academy and then at Haverling Central School in Bath, N.Y. From 1955-59, he was a physical education teacher, coach and athletic director at Bolivar (N.Y.) Central School. Craumer served as an assistant football coach at the University of Maryland in College Park before returning to Corning in 1963, when he joined the faculty of Corning Community College. He served as a physical education and health director, coach, athletic director and professor until his retirement in 1989.
Craumer has an extensive record of community service. Active with the Kiwanis International service organization since 1964, he has served in many official capacities, including Corning club president and New York District governor. Craumer has also volunteered with the American Red Cross, the American Heart Association, the New York State Special Olympics and the New York State Senior Olympics. He competed in both badminton and golf in the Senior Olympics. Since the inception of the Lady's Professional Golf Association's (LPGA) Corning Classic Golf Tournament in 1979, Craumer had participated yearly as a volunteer for scoring, chairman of the Speaker's Bureau, media center volunteer, and as a public address announcer at the first hole.
He and his wife, Margaret Wood Craumer '48, have two children: Ernie and Beth.
UPDATE- March, 2015: Craumer retired in 1989. He continued to be active in the Kiwanis International Service Organization by becoming Kiwanis International New York Governor from 1993-1994. Craumer volunteers at the PGA Golf Tournament McGladrey Classic Sea Island Golf Club in St. Simons Island, GA.
UPDATE: Craumer passed away on July 29, 2019 at age 93.
