His first jobs after college were as a teacher, elementary principal, junior-senior high school assistant principal and district principal in the Wantagh Public Schools. In 1956 he became assistant superintendent of schools at West Islip and from 1960 to 1967 was superintendent at Whitehall. From 1967 to 1971, he was headmaster at Frankfurt International School in West Germany and became district principal at Hampton Bays in 1971.

At Cortland, he played varsity football and was team captain in 1946. While an undergraduate, he started the wrestling team in 1946 and coached the team during its first year. He was a Red Letter winner in wrestling as a senior. He has a master's degree in administration and supervision from New York University.

When asked how athletics affected his life, Schumacher responded, "I have approached life and living as an athletic contest. You can't win them all but you sure can give it a hell of a try." Schumacher also reflected on his "biggest athletic thrill": "The game with St. Lawrence, when they were undefeated in 1946, and we won the game in the last minute - Baker recovering a fumble in the end zone and Hugh Jack kicking the extra point, 14-13."

Schumacher and his wife, Elizabeth, have three children: Arthur, Kurt and Mark.

UPDATE: Schumacher passed away on July 14, 2005.
