Walter R. Suess' "biggest thrill" as an athlete at Cortland came when he was selected as a soccer All-American in his junior year, the first Cortland player ever to be so honored. He also served as a wrestling team manager.
Walter served as assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction for the Wantagh Public Schools where he also served as teacher and principal; previously he had taught physical education in the North Bellmore Public Schools. He served as president for the Long Island Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD). He was also a vice president of the State ASCD and served with the board of directors for the National ASCD.
He has been a winner of the Administrator of the Year Award in Nassau County; served as chairman of a New York State Pilot Project for Competency Based Certification of Teachers and has been a member of the advisory board of the Nassau County Mental Health Association.
UPDATE: Walter passed away in November 2001.
