CORTLAND, N.Y. –
Kristen Ohberg (Brewster) recorded four goals and two assists and
Erica Geremia (Camillus/West Genesee) added three goals and five assists as nationally top-ranked Cortland defeated Mount Union, 20-5, in the second round of the NCAA Div. III women's lacrosse tournament.
Cortland (20-0) will face either Redlands (Calif.) or Pomona-Pitzer (Calif.) as part of a four-team regional next Saturday, May 17. Williams (Mass.) will play Colby (Maine) in the other game of the regional, with the two winners meeting on Sunday, May 18, in the national quarterfinals.
Marilyn Farrell (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) finished with three goals and one assist and
Tara Monaghan (Stony Point/North Rockland) added two goals and a team-high four draw controls for the Red Dragons.
Taylor Reh (Miller Place) and
Elizabeth LaComb (Syracuse/West Genesee) each scored twice.
Liz Ingalls (Centerport/St. Anthony's) made one save in the first half and
Jaclyn Beshlian (Wantagh) stopped three shots in the second half.
Emily Sendker (Lancaster) scored two goals for Mount Union (16-3), which is in only its second year as a varsity program. Taylor Pensyl (Kent, OH/Kent Roosevelt) added a goal and an assist for the Purple Raiders and Casey McHenry (Hudson, OH) finished with 12 saves, six in each half.
Cortland jumped out to a 9-0 lead 11 minutes into the game. Geremia opened the scoring 1:45 into the contest for her 100th point of the season. She has reached the 100-point mark in each of her first two years at Cortland and currently has 45 goals and 62 assists for 107 points this spring.
During the opening run, Ohberg tallied two goals and two assists, Geremia registered a goal and three assists, Monaghan scored twice and Farrell had a goal and an assist. Sendker put Mount Union on the board with 15:51 left in the first, but the Red Dragons scored five of the final six goals in the half and led 14-2 at the break. Cortland scored the first four goals of the second half, while the Raiders scored three of its goals in the final 10 minutes.
Cortland outshot Mount Union, 46-11, and caused 13 of the Raiders' 22 turnovers.
