Marshall Starts Quickly in 58-47 Win vs. Fredonia

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Junior Dustin Marshall (Newfield) scored a game-high 18 points and recorded three assists and three steals as Cortland knocked off visiting Fredonia, 58-47, in a SUNYAC contest. The Red Dragons improved to 4-3 in the conference and 8-6 overall. Fredonia is 6-7 overall and also 4-3 in the SUNYAC.

Sophomore Brian Manning (Elmira/Elmira Southside) added 11 points as Cortland's other double-figure scorer. Senior Ben Nagle (Rochester/Aquinas Institute) led the Red Dragon defensive effort with 14 rebounds and three blocked shots and also scored six points.

James Kane (Buffalo/Timon) led the Blue Devils with 13 points and Greg MacBride (Clifton Springs/Newark) finished with 10 points and a team-high five rebounds. Joseph Monahan (Floral Park/Holy Cross) distributed five assists.

Marshall scored 13 of Cortland's first 15 points, including a trio of three-pointers, as the Red Dragons took a 15-7 lead seven minutes into the contest. Cortland led by as many as 10 points in the opening half and took a 27-21 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Fredonia stayed within striking distance for the first 11-plus minutes of the second half and was down 43-35 after a Kyle Mitchell (Lake Luzerne/Hadley Luzerne) with 8:40 remaining. Cortland followed with a decisive 11-0 run over the next four minutes, capped by three-pointers from Marshall and Manning, and led 54-35 with 4:59 on the clock.

The guests staged a slight rally late, closing a 56-37 deficit with 2:42 left to a 56-47 score in the final seconds. Cortland made two foul shots to finish the scoring.
