Jake Smith joins the Cortland coaching staff as wide receivers coach in 2019 after a standout playing career with the Red Dragons.
 
Smith played three seasons for the Red Dragons from 2014-16 before missing the entire 2017 season due to injury. He returned in 2018 and caught 42 passes for 807 yards and nine touchdowns despite his playing time being drastically reduced over the final three games due to an injury.
 
A two-time All-Empire 8 selection, Smith finished second in school history with 29 touchdown catches, tied for second with 11 games with at least 100 yards receiving, third with 2,515 career receiving yards and fifth with 143 career receptions. As a sophomore in 2015 he caught two touchdown passes in an NCAA second round game at nationally second-ranked Linfield. In 2018 he set a school record for longest reception with a 97-yard touchdown catch at Utica.
 
Smith also earned D3football.com All-America and All-East honors on special teams in 2018 after blocking two kicks.
 
The Albany native graduated from Guilderland High School in 2014. He was a third team all-state selection as a senior. Smith earned a bachelor’s degree in sport management from Cortland in 2018.
