Cortland Athletics - Red Letter Award Winners

Dating back more than 70 years, the annual presentation of Red Letter Awards is one of SUNY Cortland Athletics’ greatest traditions. The awards originally signified the best or “most valuable” player on each varsity team, but over the years the guidelines for the awards have allowed teams to present them each year for a combination of reasons including team leadership and personal development, in addition to outstanding athletic skill. Recent Red Letter Award winners are displayed on a wall near the Athletics Office in the Bessie Park Class of 1901 Center.

The SUNY Cortland C-Club, led by board members Gordon Valentine ’68, Courtney Wormuth (associate director of athletics) and Fran Elia (sports information director), has researched most of Cortland’s previous Red Letter Award winners. In many of the cases where awards are “not known,” teams did not present the Red Letter at the Athletics Awards dinner, but may have at a later date without the winner being publicly recorded. Also note that most women’s sports Red Letter Awards started in the early 1980s.

Any additions or corrections to the Red Letter lists are welcome by email to the sports information office at fran.elia@cortland.edu or the associate athletic director’s office at courtney.wormuth@cortland.edu.
