SUNY Cortland Student-Athlete Academic Support

SUNY Cortland is dedicated to maximizing the academic potential of their student-athletes by providing an atmosphere that enhances learning skills, career development, and personal development.

Student-athlete support services are intended to help student-athletes reach their goals by providing the information and guidance that will enable them to use existing campus resources to enhance their academic performance.

It is our belief that athletics serve as a tremendous enhancement to the higher education experience and that a student-athlete can better compete in the classroom due to the lessons they have learned through the experiences of athletic competition.

Our Coordinator of Academic Support provides academic support to all student-athletes and serves as the liaison to The Learning Center and other academic resources on-campus.  This position also monitors academic progress and communicates regularly with our coaching staff and all members of the student’s success network.

The Learning Center

The Learning Center (TLC) provides the following services to help student-athletes discover their learning preferences and empower them to work toward great academic confidence, stronger skills and improvement in coursework.

  • Professional Tutoring: Individualized, student-centered sessions help develop skills for reading, writing across the curriculum, math, chemistry, physics, study strategies and time management.

  • Peer Tutoring: One-on-one sessions model best practices for studying and thinking about content.  Course offerings vary.

  • Supplemental Instruction (SI): Peer-led collaborative groups provide review sessions for biology and organic chemistry courses and integrate how to learn with what to learn.

  • Peer-Led Team Learning (PLTL): Peer-led collaborative workshops facilitate problem solving for undergraduate general chemistry courses.

  • Night Owl: After-hours help is available online in real time for writing, math, chemistry, biology, accounting, physics, psychology, economics and computer science.

  • Dogs in the Office/PAWS for Stress Relief:  Studies show that interaction with pets can put you at ease, reduce exam-time anxiety, increase academic success and even help with homesickness.
