Steve Patrick enters his 14th season as Cortland's track and field head coach in the 2020-21 school year. He also begins his 13th year as the Red Dragons' cross country head coach in 2020.
Patrick has been named U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Men's Atlantic Region Track and Field Coach of the Year five times (outdoors in 2008, 2012 and 2013, and indoors in 2016 and 2017), and State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Men's Track and Field Coach of the Year seven times (outdoors in 2008, 2012, 2013, 2016 and 2017, and indoors in 2009 and 2016). On the women's track and field side, he was named Atlantic Region Indoor Coach of the Year in 2012 and SUNYAC Coach of the Year eight times (outdoors in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014, and indoors in 2008, 2012, 2013 and 2014).
Patrick's men's track and field squads at Cortland have won eight SUNYAC titles (outdoors in 2008, 2012, 2013, 2016 and 2017, and indoors in 2008, 2009 and 2016). The Red Dragons finished second nationally at the 2008 NCAA Division III outdoor championships, tied for fifth nationally outdoors in 2017, tied for eighth nationally indoors in 2008, placed ninth indoors in 2017, and tied for 10th nationally in 2016. They also won the 2013 ECAC indoor crown and tied for second at the ECAC indoor meet in 2015.
The men's teams under Patrick boast six individual national titles - Amaan Siddeeq in both the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes outdoors in 2008, Jake Zanetti in the pole vault outdoors in 2009, Nick Vachon in the high jump outdoors in 2016, and Jack Flood in the heptathlon (indoors) and decathlon (outdoors) in 2017. In addition, Melique Garcia was the national runner-up in the 200-meter dash at the 2015 NCAA indoor championships, Mitch Couch was national runner-up in the hammer throw during the 2017 outdoor nationals, and Micah Assibey-Bonsu finished second in the triple jump at the 2019 indoor nationals.
Patrick's women's track and field teams have won seven SUNYAC titles (outdoors in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014, and indoors in 2012, 2013 and 2014) and have placed in the top six at the ECAC Championships four times. His teams have included indoor national high jump runners-up Taylor Hudson (2015) and Kristen Serikstad (2009).
Patrick led Cortland's men's cross country team to the 2008 NCAA Division III title and the women's team to a ninth-place national finish. He was selected as the USTFCCCA Division III Men's Cross Country National Coach of the Year, Atlantic Region Coach of the Year and SUNYAC Coach of the Year.
In 2009, he repeated as the men's Atlantic Region Coach of the Year as the Red Dragons won the regional title and finished fifth in the nation. In 2010, he earned SUNYAC Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year honors as his squad won the conference crown and finished 15th at the NCAA Championships. His Red Dragon women also placed 26th nationally in 2014. Patrick also led the men's cross country team to national finishes of 20th in 2011, 23rd in 2012, 13th in 2013 and 19th in 2014, as well as the 2013 SUNYAC title. He was chosen as the 2013 SUNYAC Men's Cross Country Coach of the Year.
Patrick served as an assistant track and field coach for the Red Dragons from 2004-07 and has been a lecturer in the College’s physical education department. Among his responsibilities as an assistant was coaching Cortland’s hurdlers, including 2007 NCAA Division III women’s 100-meter hurdles and heptathlon champion Christina Acquaviva. He currently coaches the sprinters, hurdlers, jumpers and multi-event athletes.
Previously, Patrick was an assistant track and field coach at Ithaca College from 2002-04 and an assistant cross country coach at Cortland in the fall of 2003. Prior to those duties, he was the track and field head coach and an assistant coach for the cross country programs at SUNY Cobleskill from 2000-02. He also coached Cobleskill’s men’s soccer team in 2001.
While at Cobleskill, Patrick coached eight National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III national champions and 17 NJCAA Division III All-Americans. Patrick was also a track and field and cross country assistant coach at Cortland in the 1999-2000 school year.
Patrick has obtained USA Track and Field Level II Certification in the sprints, hurdles and relays and also has been a certified USA Track and Field Level I course instructor. He has served as a frequent contributor to Track Coach, the technical publication for coaches published by USA Track and Field. He is also a certified strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association.
Patrick competed in cross country and track and field for four seasons at Cortland, competing in the NCAA Division III Championships in 1993. Patrick is a 1997 graduate of Cortland, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education. In 2000, Patrick earned a master’s degree in exercise physiology from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro.
A native of Batavia, N.Y., Patrick and his wife, Marissa, have two sons, Daniel and Kyler.
