STATE COLLEGE, PA. – The SUNY Cortland men's cross country team finished sixth overall as the lone Division III entry at the 20-team Penn State National Invitational. The Red Dragons, ranked fifth in the latest Division III national rankings, finished only seven points out of third place at the race.
LaSalle University won the race with 62 points, followed by Oklahoma (89), Penn State (120), Kentucky (123), Guelph (Ontario) (125) and Cortland (127). Among the schools Cortland defeated were Cornell, Wake Forest, George Mason, Pittsburgh and Syracuse.
Junior Shamus Nally (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) finished sixth overall, and fifth among collegiate entries, in a field of 222 runners. His time of 26:29 over 5.2 miles was just 13 seconds off the lead. Four other Red Dragons placed in the top 50. Sophomore Seth DuBois (Altamont/Guilderland) finished 18th (26:45), sophomore Justin Wager (Guilderland) was 22nd (26:51), sophomore Jerry Greenlaw (Warwick/Warwick Valley) crossed the line 38th (27:11) and junior Josh Henry (Truxton/Homer) finished 48th (27:17).
Rounding out Cortland's top seven were junior Kevin Olejar (Lewiston/Lewiston-Porter), who finished 96th (27:56), and freshman Stephen Scrafford (Cooperstown), who was 116th (28:04).
