Cortland Drops 6-1 Decision at Defending NCAA Champion Oswego

OSWEGO, N.Y. – Peter Magagna and Ryan Ellis each scored two goals as nationally 10th-ranked and defending NCAA Division III champion Oswego defeated Cortland, 6-1, in a SUNYAC contest. The Lakers are 4-2-1 overall and 4-1 in the league. Cortland is now 2-6 and 1-4.

Cortland junior goalie Mike Mistretta (Buffalo/Northland College) made 37 saves as the Red Dragons were outshot 43-14. Oswego netminder Ryan Scott made 13 saves.

The Lakers took a 2-0 lead after one period on goals by Kyle McCutcheon and Ellis. Another goal by Ellis 5:48 into  the second period extended the lead to 3-0. The Red Dragons got on the board when senior Zach Dehm (Trumbull, CT/Sacred Heart Univ.) tallied a power play goal, assisted by sophomore Frank Rizzo (St. James/NY Bobcats) and freshman Brent Fallon (Endicott/Binghamton Jr. Senators), with 7:26 left in the second.

Oswego, however, netted two power play goals in the final three minutes of the period. Magagna scored with 2:47 left and C.J. Thompson scored with 46 seconds remaining. Another Magagna power play goal completed the scoring with 1:28 left in the third period. Magagna finished with two goals and two assists and Ellis had two goals and one assist. Oswego was 3-for-9 on power play attempts and Cortland finished 1-for-4.
