CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Fredonia St. men's hockey team closed the game with three straight goals and defeated Cortland, 6-2, Friday night in SUNYAC action at Alumni Arena. With the loss, the Red Dragons fell to 3-8-1 overall and 2-5 in the conference, while the Blue Devils, the defending conference champions, improved to 5-3-2 and 3-2-1.
Sophomores
Gerard Heinz (Kings Park/NY Apple Core) and
Frank Rizzo (St. James/NY Bobcats) each scored a goal for Cortland. Senior
Barry McLaughlin (Bellport/Bay State Breakers) collected two assists, and senior
Zach Dehm (Trumbull, CT/Sacred Heart) added an assist. Junior goalie
Mike Mistretta (Buffalo/Northland College) made 17 saves.
Junior Colin Sarfeh (Laguna Niguel, CA/N. Michigan Jr. A) led the Blue Devils with a pair of goals. Junior Richard Boyce (Mississauga, ON/Brampton Jr. A) and freshmen Jordan Oye (Richmond, BC/Brampton Jr. A) and Andrew Hess (Bowling Green, ON/Walpole) had a goal and an assist apiece, while freshman Alex Morton (Cannington, ON/Notre Dame Jr. A) registered three assists. Sophomore goalie Pat Street (Annapolis, MD/The Gunnery School) made 18 saves in 57:56 before giving way to sophomore Kyle Yelich (Fredonia/Fredonia H.S.), who dod not have to stop a shot over the final 2:04.
The Blue Devils opened up a 2-0 lead after one period. Hess scored on a wrist shot from the right circle at 6:38, and Oye put the puck in the open side of the net on the left side at 13:14. Fredonia St. made it a 3-0 game just 29 seconds into the second period as junior Bryan Goudy (Port Huron, MI/Sarnia Blast) sent a wrist shot over Mistretta's left shoulder.
Cortland answered back with a pair of goals in the second to close to within 3-2. McLaughlin set up Heinz's slap shot from the left point on the power play at 5:18, then Rizzo converted a partial breakaway at 12:17 of the period for his team-high sixth goal of the season.
Sarfeh scored his first of the game on the power play at 16:08 of the second with a high wrist shot. The Blue Devils then scored a pair of goals 43 seconds apart early in the third period to make it a 6-2 game. Sarfeh scored on a wraparound at 4:11, and Boyce knocked in a loose puck in front at 4:54.
Fredonia St. outshot Cortland, 23-20, in the game and went 1-for-7 on the power play, while the Red Dragons went 1-for-5.
