CORTLAND, N.Y. – Junior
Kayla Chambers (Craryville/Taconic Hills) and sophomore
Christine McCabe (Greene) scored goals in the first 16 minutes as nationally eighth-ranked Cortland defeated Kenyon College, 2-0, in an NCAA Division III tournament first round game. The Red Dragons (17-3), making their 23rd NCAA showing and 16th in the last 17 years, advance to play Rowan University in the second round Saturday at 2 p.m. at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine.
Cortland outshot Kenyon, 13-1, and earned 16 penalty corners to none for the guests. Junior
Stacy Billings (Marathon) was not required to make any saves to post her seventh shutout of the season. Junior Karen Thompson (Mechanicsburg, PA/Mechanicsburg Area) made five saves for the Ladies (11-12), who were making their second straight NCAA appearance and third overall.
Chambers opened the scoring 4:54 into the game with her team-high 17th goal of the season. Chambers sent a penalty corner pass to sophomore
Kylie Burghardt (Lisle/Whitney Point) at the top of the circle. Burghardt fired the ball toward the left post, where Chambers was able to deflect the ball past Thompson into the cage.
McCabe extended the Red Dragon lead 15:24 into the half. Thompson's clear attempt was gathered by McCabe just ouside the arc. McCabe carried the ball into the circle and blasted a shot that deflected off Thompson and went in.
Cortland had some scoring chances in the second half, but Thompson made four of her five saves over the final 35 minutes. Kenyon's lone official shot was a spinning attempt by freshman Liz McBean (Cleveland Heights, OH/Hawken) that went wide right with less than 16 minutes remaining.
