Dehm's Hat Trick Lifts Cortland to 5-3 Win vs. Buffalo St.

Gerard Heinz
CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior Zach Dehm (Trumbull, CT/Sacred Heart) scored three of Cortland's five consecutive goals and senior goalie Jon Bova (Camillus/West Genesee) made 17 saves in his first career start as the Cortland men's hockey team skated to a 5-3 victory versus visiting Buffalo St. in SUNYAC action Saturday night. The Red Dragons improved to 4-8-1 overall and 3-5 in the conference with the win, while the Bengals fell to 2-8-2 and 1-4-2.

Dehm's hat trick was his first as a Red Dragon. Sophomore Gerard Heinz (Kings Park/ NY Apple Core) registered a goal and three assists, sophomore Patrick Palmisano (Ann Arbor, MI/Bay State Breakers) scored a goal and freshmen Jarrett Gold (East Setauket/NY Bobcats) and Justin Porpora (Hauppauge/NY Bobcats) each collected two assists for Cortland.

Sophomores D'Arcy Thomas (Gatineau, QC/College LaFleche Titans) and Ryan Ramage (Ft. Erie, ON/Brampton Capitals) and freshman Nick Petriello (St. Catherines, ON/St. Catherines Falcons) scored one goal apiece for the Bengals. Six others collected one assist each. Sophomore goalie Travis Moore (Simcoe, ON/Morrisville St.) stopped 34 shots.

Buffalo St. scored the game's first three goals over the opening period and a half of play. Thomas made it a 1-0 game at 14 minutes, six seconds of the opening period when he scored on a snap shot from the right faceoff circle. Petriello notched his team-high sixth goal of the season just 1:33 into the second stanza on a one-timer right in front. Ramage then knocked in a rebound on the power play at 9:55 for a 3-0 lead.

Cortland responded with the final two goals of the second period to make it 3-2. Palmisano stuffed in a loose puck on the left side at 10:27, and Dehm scored his first of the night on the power play at 12:47 with a wrist shot to the upper left of the goal. Heinz netted the equalizer with the man advantage when his slap shot from the left point snuck through Moore's pads at 7:02 of the third. At 14:57, Dehm scored the game-winner, also on the power play, on a rebound right in front. The Bengals pulled Moore with 1:20 remaining, but Dehm iced the game when he took a pass from Porpora near center ice and sent a shot into the open goal.
