Jones Runner-up in Both Diving Events at ECAC Championships; Red Dragons Eighth in Team Standings

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. – Cortland placed eighth out of 15 schools at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Swimming and Diving Championships, held at the Nassau County Aquatic Center. The Red Dragons earned 259.5 points. NYU won the meet with 641.5 points. Senior Amy Jones (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) finished second in both diving events, scoring 390.20 points on the one-meter board and 411.45 points on the three-meter board.

Freshman Jennifer Thorpe (Lakewood/Southwestern) finished fifth in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:30.55) and eighth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:10.54), senior Sarah O'Loughlin (Pleasantville) placed fifth in the 200-yard butterfly (2:15.40) and sophomore Samantha Buckley (Holbrook/Sachem North) was ninth in the 1,650-yard freestyle (18:22.00) and 11th in the 500-yard freestyle (5:24.56).

Three other Red Dragons posted a pair of top-16, point-scoring finishes each. Sophomore Taylor Houseman (Wellsville) placed 10th in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:33.64) and 12th in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:11.03), freshman Danielle McCarthy (Johnson City) was ninth in three-meter diving (302.80 points) and 10th in one-meter diving (288.25 points), and senior Stephanie Petfield (Thornwood/Westlake) finished 14th in both one-meter (260.20 points) and three-meter (245.30 points) diving.

Other Cortland individual scorers were freshman Stephenie Bintz (Altamont/Guilderland) in the 200-yard backstroke (12th place, 2:17.44), sophomore Kristin Barnoski (Stanley/Marcus Whitman) in the 50-yard freestyle (13th place, 25.52), senior Erica Clark (Sloatsburg/Suffern) in the 200-yard backstroke (15th place, 2:17.89), sophomore Krista Bergquist (West Islip) in the 100-yard backstroke (15th place, 1:04.00), freshman Elizabeth Neddo (Syracuse/Fowler) in the 1,650-yard freestyle (15th place, 18:55.23) and sophomore Katie Molzan (Plattsburgh/Peru) in the 50-yard freestyle (16th place, 25.77).

Cortland's best relay finishes were sixth-place showings by Molzan, Bergquist, freshman Brittany Zdybowicz (Buffalo/Kenmore West) and Barnoski in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:43.45) and Bergquist, Houseman, sophomore Lauren Mikula (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) and Barnoski in the 200-yard medley relay (1:55.10).
