OWINGS MILLS, MD. Emily Miller scored two goals as 17th-ranked Johns Hopkins University defeated fourth-ranked Cortland, 4-2, in a battle of ranked Division III teams at the Villa Julie College Black-Eyed Susan Tournament. Both teams will play again Sunday versus opponents to be announced in the two-day, eight-team tournament.
Junior Kayla Chambers (Craryville/Taconic Hills) led Cortland (0-1) with a goal and an assist. Sophomore Kyle Burghardt (Lisle/Whitney Point) scored once in her Red Dragon debut and junior goalie Stacy Billings (Marathon) made three saves.
Miller scored 17:04 into the game to give Hopkins the lead, but Burghardt connected off a Chambers pass on a penalty corner to tie the game just over two minutes later. Andrea Vandersall gave the Blue Jays the lead for good with 8:05 left in the half and Millers second goal with 2:43 remaining gave Hopkins a 3-1 halftime lead.
Cortland's deficit grew to three goals when Gabi Henn found the cage for Hopkins with 18:10 left in the game. Chambers finished the scoring with an unassisted goal with 3:46 on the clock.
