Burghardt Scores Twice, Billings Makes Seven Saves in 4-0 Win at Hartwick

ONEONTA, N.Y. – Sophomore Kylie Burghardt (Lisle/Whitney Point) scored two goals and junior Stacy Billings (Marathon) made seven saves for her second shutout of the season as nationally sixth-ranked Cortland won 4-0 at Hartwick College.

Junior Kayla Chambers (Craryville/Taconic Hills) and freshman Brenda Semit (Holland Patent) each scored once for the Red Dragons (4-1). Junior Katie Johnson (Elma/Iroquois Central) finished with two assists, while junior Samantha Spehler (Sag Harbor/Pierson) and freshman Holly Duesler (Johnstown) recorded one assist apiece.

Katie Thorpe made five saves, all in the second half, for Hartwick (2-3). The Hawks suffered their second straight loss after opening the season 2-1.

Hartwick outshot Cortland in the first half, 9-7, and earned 10 penalty corners compared to eight for the Red Dragons. Despite those numbers, Cortland still took a 3-0 lead before intermission. The Red Dragons struck for two goals in the first six minutes as Burghardt converted a Johnson assist 3:51 into the game  and Chambers netted her team-high ninth goal of the season, assisted by Spehler, at the 5:54 mark.

Burghardt's second goal of the game and third of the season, again assisted by Johnson, pushed the lead to 3-0 with 19:10 left in the half. Five of Billings' seven saves came during the first 35 minutes.

Cortland dominated play in the second half with advantages of 15-3 in shots and 15-2 in penalty corners. The lone goal of the period came with 19:45 remaining when Semit recorded her first collegiate goal off a Duesler assist.
