CORTLAND, N.Y. – Junior Kayla Chambers (Craryville/Taconic Hills) broke a 1-1 tie with her 10th goal of the season late in the first half and the nationally sixth-ranked Red Dragons defeated Hamilton College, 3-1, in a non-league game.

Sophomore Kylie Burghardt (Lisle/Whitney Point) and sophomore Lauren Eichenberger (Suffern) also scored for Cortland (5-1), which won its fifth straight game. Junior Stacy Billings (Marathon) made two saves.

Cortland took a 1-0 lead midway through the first half when Burghardt blasted a shot from the top of the circle on a penalty corner play. Chambers assisted on the goal with 17:23 left in the opening period.

Hamilton (2-2) tied the contest less than six minutes later. A pass by Jess Goldberg (Pittsburgh, PA/Choate Rosemary Hall) slid underneath Billings to Carly Andrascik (Clifton Park/Shenenedehowa), who buried the ball into the open cage with 11:31 left in the half. Cortland, however, responded with 4:45 remaining in the period when Chambers one-timed a shot inside the left post after a turnover by the Continentals. Junior Samantha Spehler (Sag Harbor/Pierson) assisted on the goal.

The game remained 2-1 until the Red Dragons notched an insurance goal with 3:16 left in the contest. Junior Melissa Smith (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) hit a ball that Eichenberger deflected over the goalie at the left post.

Cortland outshot Hamilton, 28-4. Continentals' goalie Courtney DeMaria finished with 16 saves.
