Red Dragons Extend Win Streak to Six Games With 8-3 Victory vs. Morrisville

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland men's hockey team erupted for five goals in the second period and went on to an 8-3 victory versus Morrisville St. Tuesday night in a SUNYAC contest at Alumni Arena. The Red Dragons improved to 9-8-1 overall and 4-5 in the conference with their sixth consecutive win, while the Mustangs fell to 4-18 and 0-14.

Senior Barry McLaughlin (Bellport/Bay State Breakers) led the Cortland offense with two goals and two assists. Sophomore Frank Rizzo (St. James/NY Bobcats) and freshman Graham Fallon (Endicott/Binghamton Jr. Senators) each scored a pair of goals.

Junior Nick Catanzaro (Buffalo/Boston Harbor Wolves) and freshman Jarrett Gold (East Setauket/NY Bobcats) registered a goal and an assist apiece, while senior Zach Dehm (Trumbull, CT/Sacred Heart), junior Mike Maier (Rochester/Niagara University) and sophomore Patrick Palmisano (Ann Arbor, MI/Bay State Breakers) each collected two assists. Junior goalie Mike Mistretta (Buffalo/Northland College) made 10 saves through two periods, and senior Jon Bova (Camillus/West Genesee H.S.) stopped seven shots in the third period.

Senior Joseph Herman (Congers/Ramapo Rangers) and freshmen Bobby Cass (Burlington, ON/Welland Jr. Canadians) and Brent Quinn (Perth, ON/Perth Blue Wings) each scored a goal for Morrisville St., with Cass's tally being the first of his career. Six different players collected one assist apiece. Senior Brett Freese (Geneseo/Geneseo H.S.) started in goal and registered 27 saves in 33 minutes, 23 seconds, before giving way to freshman Caylin Relkoff (Grand Forks, BC/Huntsville Muskota Otters), who turned aside 13 shots in the final 26:37.

Cortland led 2-0 after the opening period, but the Mustangs cut the lead to 3-2 midway through the second period. The Red Dragons closed the second period with four straight goals to take a 7-2 lead. The teams traded goals in the final 20 minutes for the final margin of 8-3. The Red Dragons outshot the Mustangs, 48-20, including 25-5 in the decisive second stanza.
