Cortland Wins Second Straight RPI Invitational Title

TROY, N.Y. – Senior Amy Jones (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) won both diving events and freshman Stephenie Bintz (Altamont/Guilderland) and Jennifer Thorpe (Lakewood/Southwestern) each posted an individual event victory as Cortland won the RPI Women's Swimming and Diving Invitational for the second straight year.

Cortland scored 602 points to nip runner-up New Paltz (587). RPI placed third (403), followed by Skidmore (275), Oneonta (256) and William Smith (163) in the six-team field. The Red Dragons, however, were 4-1 in the dual-meet scoring portion of the competition, with New Paltz coming away with a 124-113 win to hand Cortland (9-1) its first setback of the season.

Jones posted winning scores of 240.60 points on the three-meter board and 225.80 points on the one-meter board. Bintz won the 200-yard backstroke in 2:15.62, just over a tenth of a second ahead of the runner-up, and Thorpe captured the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:28.69. Thorpe also finished fifth in the 200-yard individual medley (2:21.41).

Sophomore Samantha Buckley (Holbrook/Sachem North) finished second in the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:08.32) and fifth in the 200-yard freestyle (2:04.77). Freshman Elizabeth Neddo (Syracuse/Fowler) was the runner-up in the 200-yard butterfly (2:19.33) and placed fifth in the 500-yard freestyle (5:33.91).

Senior Sarah O'Loughlin (Pleasantville) was third in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:32.19) and fourth in the 200-yard butterfly (2:21.05). Freshman Danielle McCarthy (Johnson City) also earned two top-five finishes, placing third in three-meter diving (213.60 points) and fourth in one-meter diving (209.35 points), as did junior Lauren Friedlander (Woodbury/Syosset), who was fourth in both the 50-yard freestyle (26.03) and 500-yard freestyle (5:31.51).

Other individual top-five finishes included third-place efforts by sophomore Kristin Barnoski (Stanley/Marcus Whitman) in the 50-yard freestyle (25.62), senior Erica Clark (Sloatsburg/Suffern) in the 200-yard backstroke (2:16.34), a fourth-place showing by freshman Rachel Phillips (Angola/Eden) in the 200-yard individual medley (2:20.79), and fifth-place finishes by sophomore Lauren Mikula (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) in the 200-yard butterfly (2:21.69) and sophomore Taylor Houseman (Wellsville) in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:33.64).

Cortland placed two entries in the top five in both relays. In the 400-yard medley relay, the combination of sophomore Krista Bergquist (West Islip), Houseman, Mikula and sophomore Katie Molzan (Plattsburgh/Peru) finished second (4:13.03) and Clark, Thorpe, Neddo and freshman Sarah Wignall (Weedsport) placed fourth (4:19.95). In the 400-yard freestyle relay, Wignall, Friedlander, Molzan and Barnoski finished second (3:45.30), while freshman Brittany Zdybowicz (Buffalo/Kenmore West), Bintz, Buckley and sophomore Megan Donlevy (Lake Grove/Sachem North) were fifth (3:54.74).
