CORTLAND, N.Y. – Sophomore Paul Oliver (Phoenix/John C. Birdlebough) recorded career highs of 16 points and 16 rebounds as Cortland defeated Oneonta, 79-67, for its eighth win in nine games. The Red Dragons are 13-3 overall and 6-1 in SUNYAC play with the victory.
Oliver made 7-of-13 shots from the floor in 30 minutes of action. Sophomore Will Coston (Kerhonkson/Rondout Valley) led Cortland with 17 points and sophomore Mike Lewis (Central Square) added 16 points, nine rebounds and three steals. Junior Carson Niehoff (West Islip) and freshman Ron Evans (New Hartford) scored nine points apiece, with Niehoff also blocking a career-best four shots.
Oneonta (10-7, 5-4) was led by sophomore Michael Grimes (Albany/Catholic Central), who came off the bench to score 20 points on 7-of-9 shooting. He also led the Red Dragons with nine rebounds and four assists. Senior Bobby Fisk (Coeymans/Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons) also finished in double figures with 12 points.
Cortland led 18-2 with 13:37 left in the first half and held as much as a 20-point lead in the first half before settling on a 41-25 halftime edge. Coston and Lewis accounted for 12 of Cortland's first 17 points. Oneonta got no closer than 10 points in the second half. Oliver scored 13 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in the second half.
