Sarah O'Loughlin's time of 2:10.21 in the 200-yard butterfly is two seconds better than the previous school mark set in 1982
CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior
Sarah O'Loughlin (Pleasantville) broke a 26-year old school record in the 200-yard butterfly and senior
Amy Jones (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) set a school record in one-meter diving as Cortland completed its dual-meet season with a 106.5-98.5 victory over visiting New Paltz. The Red Dragons (10-1) trailed by one point before earning the victory with a win in the final event.
O'Loughlin's butterfly time of 2:10.21 breaks the previous school record of 2:12.21 set by Kay Simonson in 1982. O'Loughlin also teamed with sophomore
Krista Bergquist (West Islip), sophomore
Taylor Houseman (Wellsville) and sophomore
Kristin Barnoski (Stanley/Marcus Whitman) to win the opening 400-yard medley relay (4:04.41).
Jones posted a score of 432.00 points to establish a new school record in one-meter diving. She also scored 476.10 points on the three-meter board. Both scores are NCAA provisional qualifying marks. New Paltz did not have any divers, so the events did not factor into the team scoring.
Trailing 94.5-93.5, Cortland won the meet when freshman
Teresa Riley (Liverpool), sophomore
Katie Molzan (Plattsburgh/Peru), junior
Lauren Friedlander (Woodbury/Syosset) and Barnoski finished first in the meet-ending 400-yard frestyle relay (3:42.63).
Sophomore
Samantha Buckley (Holbrook/Sachem North) won both the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:58.89) and 500-yard freestyle (5:25.11). Freshman Jennnifer Thorpe (Lakewood/Southwestern) was the Red Dragons' other winner with a victory in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:29.13).
Michelle Coombs (Newburgh/Newburgh Free Academy) led New Paltz (7-3) with wins in both the 50-yard freestyle (24.88) and 200-yard backstroke (2:09.36). Coombs is the defending NCAA Division III champion in the 100-yard freestyle. Marissa Morris (Toms River, NJ/Toms River East) won the 200-yard freestyle (2:00.65), junior Erica Ellis (Barneveld/Holland Patent) captured the 200-yard individual medley (2:18.91) and freshman Christine Rieth (Penfield/Webster) touched the wall first in the 100-yard freestyle (55.75).
Cortland and New Paltz return to action Feb. 6-9 at the SUNYAC Championships, which will be held at the Flickinger Center at Erie Community College in Buffalo.
