CORTLAND, N.Y. - Five different players scored goals as the Cortland men's hockey team skated to a 5-2 victory versus Fredonia St. Friday night in day one of the SUNYAC Challenge. The Red Dragons (1-0) host Geneseo (1-0) Saturday at 7 p.m., while the Blue Devils (0-1) face Buffalo St. (0-1) Saturday at 2 p.m.

For Cortland, sophomores Jarrett Gold (East Setauket/NY Bobcats) and Greg Haney (Marcellus/National Sports Academy) and freshman Bryan Elfant (Rockaway Beach/NY Apple Core) each recorded a goal and an assist. Junior Patrick Palmisano (Ann Arbor, MI/Bay State Breakers) and freshman Ryan Markell (Columbus, OH/Ohio St. University) added a goal. Seniors Mike Egan (Smithtown/NY Apple Core) and Nick Catanzaro (Buffalo/Boston Harbor Wolves), junior Gerard Heinz (Kings Park/NY Apple Core) and freshman Matt Davie (Brooklyn/NY Apple Core) collected one assist each. Three goalies split time evenly for the Red Dragons. Sophomore Dan Jewell (Medford/National Sports Academy) stopped 19-of-20 shots in the opening period, freshman Mike Reilly (New York/Bismarck Bobcats) turned aside 13-of-14 shots in the second period and senior Mike Mistretta (Buffalo/Northland College) saved all 12 shots he faced in the final period.

Sophomore Alex Morton (Cannington, ON/Notre Dame Jr. A) and freshman Bryan Ross (Livonia, MI/Alpena Jr. A) each scored a goal for the Blue Devils. Sophomores Ian Evans (Clinton/National Sports Academy) and Steve Rizer (Smithtown/Capital District) and freshmen Chris de Bruyn (Calgary, AB/Brooks Jr. A) and Billy Sanborn (Monroe/The Gunnery School) collected one assist apiece. Junior goalie Pat Street (Annapolis, MD/The Gunnery School) made 30 saves.
