Eight Victories Help Red Dragons Win Cortland Sprint Relays

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Cortland won eight races on its way to a first place finish at the five-team Cortland Sprint Relays.The Red Dragons finished with 288 points, followed by Fredonia (229), Oswego (192), Clarkson (159) and Oneonta (108).

Junior Dan Evans (Hamburg) was on four winning relay entries, while senior Brett Poffenbarger (Owego/Owego Free Academy), junior Jeff Moessinger (Buffalo/Iroquois) and senior Drew Hilker (Ithaca) were each on three winning relays. These totals do not include the 8x25-yard freestyle relay (Cortland won that event, but not all eight swimmers are known at this point).

The combination of freshman Dan Drew (Victor), Poffenbarger, Moessinger and Evans won the 400-yard medley relay (3:45.69) and Moessinger, senior Jimmy Roeser (Suffern) and Hilker teamed to win the 300-yard butterfly relay (2:50.34).

Poffenbarger, senior H. Austin Rhoads (Orchard Park) and freshman Judd Simon (Oneida) captured the 300-yard breaststroke relay (3:18.55) and Evans, Poffenbarger, sophomore James McCabe (North Massapequa/Farmingdale) and Hilker won the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:30.31).

Hilker, Simon and Evans won the 300-yard medley relay (2:53.74) and Evans, Moessinger, freshman Dan Salvatore (Clarence) and Hilker finished first in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:22.54). The 200-yard medley relay team of Drew, Poffenbarger, freshman Dylan Scheemaker (Fairport) and Evans won in 1:43.40.

Two other Cortland relays finished second - the 400-yard medley quartet of Simon, Rhoads, Scheemaker and Hilker (3:51.73) and the 300-yard backstroke trio of sophomore Luis Welch (Avon), Simon and Drew (2:52.81).
