GENEVA, N.Y. - Hobart scored four goals in a five-minute span midway through the third period to pull away for an 8-3 victory over Cortland in a non-league matchup. The Statesmen improve to 2-1 and Cortland slips to 1-2 with the decision.
Patrick Moriarty led Hobart with two goals and an assist. He was one of seven players to score goals for the hosts. Matthew Wallace finished with a goal and two assists and five players - Christopher Bower, Nick DeCroo, Thomas Capalbo, Bryant Harris and Bobby Cahill - recorded a goal and an assist each. Keith Longo made 36 saves between the pipes.
Sophomore
Greg Haney (Marcellus/National Sports Academy) scored two of Cortland's three goals and freshman
Jake Saville (Bellingham, WA/Marquette Rangers) added his first collegiate goal. Sophomore
Dan Jewell (Medford/National Sports Academy) started in goal and made 27 saves in 52:54. Senior
Mike Mistretta (Buffalo/Northland College) stopped four shots and allowed two goals over the final 7:06. Both teams finished with 39 shots on goal.
Hobart finished the game 4-for-9 on power play opportunities, including a pair of goals with a two-skater advantage. The Statesmen also killed off all six of Cortland's extra-man chances.
Cortland grabbed a 1-0 lead on Haney's goal, assisted by
Jarrett Gold (East Setauket/NY Bobcats) and
Patrick Palmisano (Ann Arbor, MI/Bay State Breakers), 8:14 into the first period. Hobart tied the game on a DeCroo power play goal 12:32 into the period, then scored the first two goals of the second period. The first was a two-man power play goal by Wallace 4:09 into the stanza and the other was a Bower goal with 9:04 left.
The Red Dragons drew back within a goal with just 52 seconds left in the second as Saville scored off an
Alex Arthur (Portland, ME/Boston Bulldogs) assist. The game stayed at 3-2 until a power play goal by Moriarty with 9:56 on the clock. Cahill struck just 15 seconds later to give Hobart a 5-2 lead and Moriarty and Harris added goals to push the margin to 7-2 with 4:58 left.
Cortland's final goal came off the stick of Haney with 1:54 remaining.
Mike Egan (Smithtown/NY Apple Core Jr. B) and
Ryan Markell (Columbus, OH/Ohio St. University) notched assists on the play. A goal by Hobart's Capalbo with 19 seconds left and the Statesmen up two skaters completed the scoring.
Cortland opens SUNYAC play this Friday by hosting Oswego at 7 p.m.
