BETHLEHEM, PA. – Competing against some of the top Division I teams in the nation, the Cortland men's cross country team finished in ninth place out of 45 schools at the Lehigh University Paul Short Run. The Red Dragons, ranked first nationally in Division III, totaled 313 points. Wisconsin, ranked sixth in Division I, won the meet with 52 points, followed by 30th-ranked Syracuse (96), 25th-ranked Villanova (173), fourth-ranked Iona (190) and Cornell (201) in the top five.
Of the top 22 teams in the final standings, 20 were Division I schools and another was a Canadian school (eighth-place Guelph). Cortland was one of just six non-Division I schools in the field.
Cortland's top four runners all finished with eight seconds of each other. Junior
Justin Wager (Guilderland) placed 44th out of 298 runners with a time of 24:39 over 8,000 meters. Senior
Josh Henry (Truxton/Homer) was 46th, also officially in 24:39, senior
Shamus Nally (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) finished 48th in 24:42 and junior
Seth DuBois (Altamont/Guilderland) was 56th in 24:47.
The Red Dragons' other finishers were junior
Kyle O'Brien (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) in 119th place (25:20) and sophomore
Stephen Scrafford (Cooperstown) in 170th place (25:49).
Sam Chelanga of Liberty University won the race in 23:05, 38 seconds ahead of the field. Other Division III teams in the field were Haverford (27th place) and The College of New Jersey (30th place).
