MONTCLAIR, N.J. - The nationally 12th-ranked Cortland field hockey team scored three first-half goals and held on for a 3-2 win at Montclair St. Saturday afternoon in a non-conference matchup. The Red Dragons stretched their winning streak to 13 games and improved to 15-1 on the season, while the Red Hawks fell to 9-7.

Senior Sam Spehler (Sag Harbor/Pierson) and junior Christine McCabe (Greene) led Cortland with a goal and an assist each, and senior Kayla Chambers (Craryville/Taconic Hills) added a goal. Senior goalie Stacy Billings (Marathon) made eight saves, and junior Kylie Burghardt (Lisle/Whitney Point) registered a career-best three defensive saves.

For Montclair St., Megan Walsh notched both goals, and Melissa Flaherty and Jenna Gallo each recorded an assist. Emina Udrjia stopped five shots.

Cortland erupted for three goals in a five minute, 34 second span in the first half to take control of the game. Spehler scored her 12th goal of the season at 22:48 when she deflected a blast from McCabe. McCabe then made it 2-0 with an unassisted goal at 27:26 that deflected in off a Montclair St. defender. Just 54 seconds later, Spehler sent Chambers on a breakaway who blasted a shot in the cage from five yards away.

The Red Hawks responded in the second half with a pair of scores from Walsh. Less than five minutes into the second stanza, Flaherty assisted on Walsh's goal at the left side of the cage. The Red Hawks pulled to within 3-2 at 61:22 when Walsh again scored on the left side after a Burghardt defensive save. Cortland, however, held on over the final 8:38 to earn the win.
