Red Dragons Place Ninth at NCAA Championships; Palen Earns All-America Honors

HANOVER, IND. - The SUNY Cortland women's cross country team finished in ninth place out of 32 teams at the NCAA Division III Championships, hosted by Hanover College. Sophomore Andi Palen (Gardiner/Wallkill) earned All-America honors with a 29th-place individual finish in 21:35.63 over 6,000 meters.

Middlebury won the team title with 179 points. Cortland was the top Atlantic Region team in the field with 351 points. Middlebury's winning point total was the highest in NCAA Division III women's cross country history, eclipsing the previous record of 148 points set by Cortland when it won the 1997 national title.

Senior Brittany Brunetto (Fishkill/Beacon) finished 121st in the 279-runner field in 22:37.98 and freshman Alyson Dalton (Sherrill/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) was 123rd in 22:38.43. Senior Alanna Hollborn (Islip Terrace/East Islip) placed 132nd in 22:41.62 and junior Lisa Holt (Phoenix/John C. Birdlebough) was 134th in 22:42.82.

Senior Erin McGrath (Oakdale/Connetquot) crossed the line 173rd in 23:04.82. Cortland only had six runners out of the allowed seven compete. Marie Borner of Bethel College (Minn.) won the race in 20:43.91.

Palen was in fifth place about 2,500 meters into the race and was 16th just over two-thirds of the way in. She was still in 17th place with 1,000 meters left before dropping back to 29th. The top 35 finishers were All-Americans.

Cortland finished in the top 10 nationally for the 16th time in school history. The Red Dragons have won seven national titles (1989-90-92-93-94-95-97).
