ELMIRA, N.Y. – Elmira rallied from a 15-point deficit in the final 15 minutes and knocked off Cortland, 69-63, in a non-league matchup. The Soaring Eagles are now 1-2 and Cortland's record evens at 2-2 with the decision.
Jon Adamson and Bobby DiPiazza led Elmira with 18 points each, with Adamson also grabbing a team-high 14 rebounds. Noah Zazulia chipped in with 10 points and seven rebounds off the bench.
Junior
Mike Lewis (Brewerton/Central Square) finished with 19 points and six rebounds for the Red Dragons. Junior
Paul Oliver (Phoenix) made 6-of-7 shots and ended the game with 15 points and 14 rebounds, while senior
Juan Miolan (Troy) tallied 13 points and eight rebounds.
Lewis scored 13 points and Miolan 11 in the first half as Cortland grabbed a 43-30 lead at the break. The Red Dragons trailed only once in the period at 9-8 and held a 17-13 lead with 12:15 left before Miolan poured in eight straight points, including two treys, to push the margin to 11.
Cortland led by 15 on three occasions in the second half, the last at 53-38 on a Lewis layup with 14:55 left. Elmira scored the next nine points, however, and was within 53-47 on a Bryan Matthews layup with 11:08 remaining.
A Lewis free throw with 8:34 left gave Cortland a 57-50 lead, but the hosts used a 13-2 run over the next five minutes to take a 63-59 lead. Adamson scored six points and DiPiazza added five points to fuel that rally. Oliver sank two foul shots at the 2:15 mark to cut the deficit to two, but neither team scored again until Matthews hit two charity tosses with 24 seconds remaining to put Elmira up four. Following a Cortland three-point miss, Zazulia and DiPiazza each made two free throws in the last 16 seconds to ice the game.
