BUFFALO, N.Y. – Joel Sheppard scored three goals and assisted on another as Buffalo State pulled away over the final two periods to defeat Cortland, 10-3, in a SUNYAC contest. The Bengals (3-4, 2-1 SUNYAC) scored four power play goals in addition to three shorthanded tallies.
Jim Durham finished with two goals for the hosts. Shareef Labreche and Jason Hill each added a goal and three assists and Nick Petriello notched four assists. Zach Grasley made 19 saves.
Justin Porpora (Hauppauge/NY Bobcats),
Mike Maier (Rochester/Niagara University) and
Mike Egan (Smithtown/NY Apple Core Jr. B) scored goals for Cortland (2-4, 0-2). Porpora's and Egan's goals came on power plays and Maier's came on a second-period penalty shot.
Mike Mistretta (Buffalo/Northland College) started in goal for the Red Dragons but was injured 4:12 into the first period when Buffalo State scored its first goal.
Dan Jewell (Medford/National Sports Academy) played the final 55:48 and made 28 saves.
Cortland grabbed a 1-0 lead 1:52 into the game on a Porpora goal, with
Jake Saville (Bellingham, WA/Marquette Rangers) notching the first of his two assists on the night. Hill tied the game with a power play goal and Sheppard's goal with 2:39 left in the period gave the Bengals a 2-1 lead after one period.
Durham scored 1:53 into the second period and Labreche tallied shorthanded at the 4:15 mark to extend the lead to 4-1. Sheppard's second goal came with Buffalo State up two skaters 14:43 into the period. Maier scored on a penalty shot after a hooking penalty against the Bengals with 3:31 left, but the hosts added a Durham shorthanded goal with 1:44 remaining in the period and the lead was 6-2 after two stanzas.
Kevin Kozlowski scored for Buffalo State 3:46 into the third period, followed by Egan's goal for Cortland less than four minutes later assisted by Saville and
Nick Catanzaro (Buffalo/Boston Harbor Wolves). The Bengals scored the last three goals, starting with a Will Lacasse 6-on-4 power play tally. Sheppard completed his hat trick on a power play with 7:28 left and Connor King scored shorthanded with 2:49 left.
Cortland stays on the road to play at Fredonia Saturday night at 7 p.m.
