Liz Neddo touched the wall first in both the 1,000-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly
CORTLAND, N.Y. - Cortland captured the top two spots in the final event, the 200-yard freestyle relay, to squeak past Ithaca, 122-121, in a dual meet at Holsten Pool. The Red Dragons are 2-0 in dual action this season.
Cortland needed to finish first and second in the relay to win the meet. The combination of junior Katie Molzan (Plattsburgh/Peru), sophomore Theresa Riley (Liverpool), senior Lauren Friedlander (Woodbury/Syosset) and junior Kristin Barnoski (Stanley/Marcus Whitman) won the race by more than a two-second margin in 1:41.44. The real battle was for second place, where the quartet of junior Ciera Broadwell (Canandaigua/Marcus Whitman), junior Megan Donlevy (Lake Grove/Sachem North), sophomore Sarah Wignall (Weedsport) and junior Krista Bergquist (West Islip) touched the wall in 1:43.81, about three-tenths of a second better than Ithaca's time of 1:44.13.
Sophomore Liz Neddo (Syracuse/Fowler) and sophomore Danielle McCarthy (Johnson City) each won two indvidual events for the Red Dragons. Neddo captured the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:07.51) and 100-yard butterfly (1:02.59), whlie McCarthy was victorious in both 1-meter diving (185.48 points) and 3-meter diving (211.12 points). Barnoski earned a pair of runner-up finishes in the 50-yard freestyle (25.41) and 100-yard freestyle (56.08).
