Red Dragons Second After SUNYAC Opening Day

BUFFALO, N.Y. - The SUNY Cortland men's swimming and diving team is in second place after the first full day of competition at the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Championships. Geneseo leads the meet with 258.5 points, followed by Cortland (168.5), New Paltz (164), and Oswego (161) atop the nine-team field.

Cortland's best finish was a second-place effort by junior Roy Culkin (Holtsville/Sachem East), senior Brett Humphreys (Amsterdam), sophomore Jeff Moessinger (Buffalo/Iroquois) and junior Drew Hilker (Ithaca) in the 400-yard medley relay (3:32.65).

Three Red Dragons earned third-place finishes - Humphreys in the 200-yard individual medley (1:58.91), Hilker in the 50-yard freestyle (21.43) and sophomore Caleb VanSickle (Stanley/Marcus Whitman) in the 500-yard freestyle (4:47.82).

Junior David Dow (Port St. Lucie, FL/Glastonbury (CT)) finished fifth in the 500-yard freestyle (4:48.10) and senior Kevin Stuttle (Dryden) was fifth in one-meter diving (449.95 points). The 200-yard freestyle team of senior Jeremy Cuebas (Brentwood), freshman Matt Young (Richmondville/Schoharie), junior Brett Poffenbarger (Owego/Owego Free Academy) and senior Evan Jones (East Amherst/Williamsville North) placed fifth in 1:28.88. Also of note was Young's victory in the consolation finals (ninth place overall) of the 50-yard freestyle (21.85).

The competition continues Friday and Saturday at the Flickinger Center on the campus of Erie Community College.
