Kristin Barnoski (Stanley/Marcus Whitman) set a new school record in the 400-yard medley relay to highlight Cortland's performances during the first full day of competition at the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Women's Swimming and Diving Championships.
Cortland is in third place out of nine teams after the opening day with 167 points. Geneseo is first with 245 points, followed by New Paltz (183), Cortland and Oswego (143) in the top four.
The Red Dragons finished third in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 4:02.10, eclipsing the previous school record of 4:02.89 set two seasons ago.
Senior
Amy Jones (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) placed third in three-meter diving (435.35 points) and Barnoski was third in the 50-yard freestyle (24.53). Sophomore
Samantha Buckley (Holbrook/Sachem North) finished fourth in the 500-yard freestyle (5:20.43, 5:20.20 in prelims) and the 200-yard freestyle relay team of sophomore
Katie Molzan (Plattsburgh/Peru), Bergquist, junior
Lauren Friedlander (Woodbury/Syosset) and Barnoski touched the wall fourth (1:40.24).
Also in the top eight in their events were freshman
Rachel Phillips (Angola/Eden) in the 200-yard individual medley (5th place, 2:15.33) and freshman
Danielle McCarthy (Johnson City) in three-meter diving (374.25 points). In addition, freshman Elizabeth Neddo (Syracuse/Fowler) won the consolation finals (ninth overall) in the 500-yard freestyle. Her time of 5:18.61 was faster than five of the eight finalists in the event.
The competition continues Friday and Saturday at the Flickinger Center on the campus of Erie Community College.
