Slow Start Does in Red Dragons at Fredonia

Patrick Palmisano scored Cortland's first goal on a penalty shot
FREDONIA, N.Y. – Fredonia scored on four of its seven power play opportunities, including twice in the first four minutes and eight seconds, and the Blue Devils defeated Cortland, 8-2, in a SUNYAC contest.

Fredonia (13-7-3, 9-3-2 SUNYAC) clinched at least third place in the SUNYAC standings with the win and stayed within three points of second-place Oswego.

Cortland is 11-10-2 overall and 6-7-1 in the league. The Red Dragons are in a three-way tie for fourth place with 13 points along with Buffalo State and Potsdam with two games left. The top six teams in the league earn SUNYAC playoff berths, with the third and fourth-place teams hosting first-round games. Cortland plays Saturday at Buffalo State and hosts Oswego Feb. 16 to end the regular season.

Bryan Goudy led the Blue Devils with three goals and Matt McKeown scored twice and assisted on two goals. Neal Sheehan added a goal and three assists and Steve Albert finished with a goal and two assists. Kevin Amborski made 35 saves.

Sophomore Patrick Palmisano (Ann Arbor, MI/Bay State Breakers) and junior Mike Maier (Rochester/Niagara University) scored Cortland's goals. Junior Mike Mistretta (Buffalo/Northland College) stopped 19 shots but allowed eight goals in two periods of play. Senior Jon Bova (Camillus/West Genesee HS) turned away all eight shots on goal he faced in the third period. Cortland finished the game with a slight 37-35 edge in shots on goal.

Sheehan and McKeown scored on Fredonia's first two power play attempts, and Alex Morton's goal 10:49 into the period gave the hosts a  3-0 lead. Cortland got on the board 1:01 into the second period when Palmisano was hooked on a breakaway while the Red Dragons were shorthanded. He was awarded a penalty shot and scored to cut the deficit to 3-1.

Fredonia, however, scored the next five goals, two on the power play, over the next 16 minutes. Goudy scored all three of his goals during that stretch. The Red Dragons ended the run when Maier converted off a Gerard Heinz (Kings Park/NY Apple Core Jr. A) assist for a power play goal with 1:05 remaining. Neither team scored in the third period.
