Taylor Houseman broke a 10-year-old school record and provisionally qualified for NCAAs with her winning 100-yard breaststroke time
BUFFALO, N.Y. – SUNY Cortland sophomores
Taylor Houseman (Wellsville) and
Krista Bergquist (West Islip) each won individual events with school-record times during the second day of competition at the SUNYAC Women's Swimming and Diving Championships. The meet concludes on Saturday.
Cortland stayed in third place out of nine schools in the team standings. Geneseo is still in first with 546 points, followed by New Paltz (416), Cortland (370) and Oswego (365) in a tight battle for second through fourth places.
Houseman won the 100-yard breaststroke with an NCAA Division III Championship provisional qualifying time of 1:06.89. She broke the previous school record of 1:08.15, set by Beth Whitehead in 1998, with her prelim time of 1:07.89 before re-establishing the record in the finals. Bergquist's winning time of 1:00.57 in the 100-yard backstroke broke her own school mark of 1:00.76 from last season.
The quartet of Bergquist, Houseman, freshman Elizabeth Neddo (Syracuse/Fowler) and sophomore
Kristin Barnoski (Stanley/Marcus Whitman) finished fourth in the 200-yard medley relay (1:52.10), while Bergquist turned in a fourth-place effort in the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.29). Freshman
Rachel Phillips (Angola/Eden) was fourth in the 400-yard individual medley (4:49.65) and the 800-yard freestyle relay team of sophomore
Samantha Buckley (Hollbrook/Sachem North), sophomore Megan Donlevy (Lake Grove/Sachem North), sophomore
Katie Molzan (Plattsburgh/Peru) and Neddo placed fifth (8:09.30).
Senior
Sarah O'Loughlin (Pleasantville) earned two top-eight finishes, placing sixth in the 400-yard individual medley (4:53.55, 4:48.97 in prelims) and seventh in the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.81). Freshman
Jennifer Thorpe (Lakewood/Southwestern) was sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:09.08) and Buckley finished seventh in the 400-yard individual medley (4:54.82, 4:53.49 in prelims).
