Red Dragons Break Four School Records at Boston University

Justin Wager set school records in the mile and 800-meter run and was part of a record-breaking distance medley relay
BOSTON, MASS. - Sophomore Justin Wager (Guilderland) broke two school individual records and was part of a record-setting distance medley relay team to lead Cortland's performances at the Boston University Valentine Invitational. Wager teamed with junior Niko Viglione (Purdys/Somers), senior J.J. Riese (Central Square/Paul V. Moore) and sophomore Alex Kalinkos (Flushing/St. Francis Prep) on the DMR record, while senior Amaan Siddeeq (Goshen) broke his own school mark in the 200 meters.

Wager automatically qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships with his school and New York State Collegiate Track Conference (NYSCTC) record time of 4:09.08 in the mile. He finished fourth in a field of 174 total competitors. The previous school mark of 4:12.33 was set by Andrew Cloke last year. Wager also finished 32nd out of 189 runners, and first in his heat, with an 800-meter time of 1:55.13. The previous school record of 1:55.1 (which is slower than Wager's time when converted to fully automated timing) was set by Jason Porter in 1991.

In the distance medley relay, Cortland finished fourth in 9:56.49, a new SUNYAC and NYSCTC record and an NCAA automatic qualifier. It broke the previous school record by more than 10 seconds. That record was set last year by C. Fred Joslyn, Riese, Viglione and Cloke. Viglione opened the race with a time of 3:00.2 over 1,200 meters, followed by Riese's 50.1 seconds for 400 meters. Kalinkos covered the next 800 meters in 1:56.4 and Wager ran the final 1,600 meters in 4:09.4.

Siddeeq finished first out of 207 entries in the 200 meters in 21.46 seconds, eclipsing his own school and SUNYAC mark as well as setting a new NYSCTC record. He also placed first out of 119 sprinters in the 55-meter dash in 6.34 seconds. That time is an NCAA automatic qualifier, although Siddeeq already ranked first nationally with his 6.30 time (converted from a 60-meter dash time) earlier this season.

Three Red Dragons provisionally qualified for nationals in the 5,000 meters. Junior Shamus Nally (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) finished 14th out of 127 runners in 14:35.04, followed by sophomore Seth DuBois (Altamont/Guilderland) in 15th place (14:35.26) and junior Josh Henry (Truxton/Homer) in 24th place (14:46.99). Those times are the second, third and fourth fastest times, respectively, in school history. Sophomore Jerry Greenlaw (Warwick/Warwick Valley) qualified for ECAC's in the event with a 61st-place time of 15:08.12.

Other highlights at the meet included freshman Gino Bisceglia's (Norwood/Norwood-Norfolk) 46th-place time of 50.15 seconds in the 400 meters, the second-best time in school history, along with a 52nd-place effort of 1:56.50 by Kalinkos in the 800 meters. Both times are ECAC qualifiers.
