Cortland Places Third at SUNYAC Championships; Neddo Victorious in 1,650-Yard Freestyle

Elizabeth Neddo set a school record in the 1,650-yard freestyle and finished fourth in the 200-yard butterfly
BUFFALO, N.Y. – SUNY Cortland freshman Elizabeth Neddo (Syracuse/Fowler) and sophomore Taylor Houseman (Wellsville) broke school records during the final day of competition at the SUNYAC Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at the Burt Flickinger Center. The Red Dragons finished third as a team with 589.5 points. Geneseo captured the title with 801 points, followed by New Paltz (607), Cortland, Oswego (566) and Fredonia (359) in the top portion of the nine-team standings.

Neddo won the 1,650-yard freestyle crown with a time of 18:12.88. The previous school mark of 18:17.75 was set by Krista Lennox in 2005. Houseman established her second school record in as many days with her second-place, NCAA provisional qualifying time of 2:26.86 in the 200-yard breaststroke. She initially broke the record of 2:28.79, set by Aubrey Talaska in 2005, with her prelim time of 2:27.37. Houseman set a school record in the 100-yard breaststroke on Friday.

Freshman Jennifer Thorpe (Lakewood/Southwestern) also provisionally qualified for nationals in the 200-yard breaststroke with her third-place time of 2:27.01, which would have been a school record if not for Houseman's time. Senior Sarah O'Loughlin (Pleasantville) recorded a second-place time of 2:12.86 in the 200-yard butterfly.

Three Red Dragons earned fourth-place finishes - sophomore Samantha Buckley (Holbrook/Sachem North) in the 1,650-yard freestyle (18:20.12), Neddo in the 200-yard butterfly (2:15.09) and senior Amy Jones (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) in one-meter diving (405.90 points).

Jones was also the co-recipient of the league's Grace H. Mowatt Award, which is presented annually to a female swimmer or diver in the league for academic and athletic achievements. She shared the award with Geneseo's Justine Diaz. Mowatt graduated from Cortland in 1959 and coached at Oswego for 30 years until her retirement in the early 1990s.

The 400-yard freestyle relay of sophomore Katie Molzan (Plattsburgh/Peru), sophomore Krista Bergquist (West Islip), junior Lauren Friedlander (Woodbury/Syosset) and sophomore Kristin Barnoski (Stanley/Marcus Whitman) finished fifth in 3:42.98. Barnoski was seventh in the 100-yard freestyle (55.25, 54.79 in prelims), Friedlander touched the wall seventh in the 200-yard backstroke (2:14.11, 2:12.31 in prelims) and freshman Danielle McCarthy (Johnson City) finished eighth in one-meter diving (350.25 points). In addition, freshman Rachel Phillips (Angola/Eden) won the 200-yard breaststroke consolation finals (ninth place overall) in 2:31.49.
