CORTLAND, N.Y. – Junior Alanna Hollborn (Islip Terrace/East Islip) and junior Sarah Kimball (Liverpool) each won individual titles as Cortland finished third at the closely-contested State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The meet was held Friday and Saturday at the SUNY Cortland Stadium Complex.
Only 22 points separated the top three schools. Geneseo won the title with 165 points, followed by Brockport at 146 and Cortland with 143. Rounding out the field were Buffalo State (117), Fredonia (71), Plattsburgh (63), Oswego (43) and Oneonta (30).
Hollborn won the 3,000-meter steeplechase with an NCAA provisional time of 11:10.83 seconds. She was also third in the 1,500 meters (4:46.03) and fifth in the 800 meters (2:25.96, 2:18.85 in prelims).
Kimball and junior Keri Laviska (Binghamton/Susquehanna Valley) each established new school, meet and conference records and provisionally qualified for nationals with heights of 11' 9” in the pole vault. Kimball repeated as league champion due to having fewer misses than Laviska. Kimball also finished eighth in the 100-meter hurdles (16.89, 16.64 in prelims).
Sophomore Kristen Serikstad (Oyster Bay) turned in runner-up performances in two events. She provisionally qualified for nationals in the high jump with a height of 5' 5.25”. She matched the winner's height and tied the meet record, but placed second due to more misses. Serikstad was second in the javelin with a throw of 116' 0”. Freshman Andrea Palen (Gardiner/Wallkill) finished second in the 10,000 meters in 37:53.78.
Cortland took the top four spots in the pole vault. In addition to Kimball and Laviska, sophomore Katie Taber (Montour Falls/Odessa-Montour) finished third (10' 3.25”) and freshman Sarah Wignall (Weedsport) finished fourth (9' 3.25”).
Junior Carly Kennedy (North Tonawanda) recorded a third-place time of 15.72 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles and was seventh in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:08.08 (1:07.72 in prelims). Senior Christa McGough (Remsen) placed third in the triple jump (35' 11.25”) and sixth in the long jump (16' 8.5”) and junior Brittany Brunetto (Beacon) was third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (11:55.47).
The Red Dragons also finished third in two relays. The 4x100-meter combination of Taber, sophomore Mallory Baker (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa), McGough and senior Ashley Wirges (Hopewell Junction/Arlington) were clocked at 51.31 seconds and the 4x400-meter quartet of Baker, Kennedy, freshman Kristie O'Reilly (Carmel) and freshman Jessica Stanton (Elmira Heights/Thomas A. Edison) finished in 4:04.81.
Sophomore Kate Ramsbotham (West Islip) posted fourth-place finishes in both the 800 meters (2:25.39, 2:21.39 in prelims) and the 1,500 meters (4:46.20), while sophomore Lauren Phillips (Batavia) was fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (12:06.70). Stanton finished fifth in the 400 meters (1:00.71, 1:00.24 in prelims) and eighth in the 800 meters (2:33.31).
Sophomore Valerie Reynolds (Liverpool) placed fifth in the high jump (4' 11.5”), Baker was sixth in the 400 meters (1:00.79, 1:00.43 in prelims) and Wirges was seventh in the 200 meters (26.35). The Red Dragons' other points at the meet came from eighth-place finishes by sophomore Katie Dylag (Williamsville/Williamsville East) in the 5,000 meters (19:40.76), junior Kara Cangemi (Central Square/Paul V. Moore) in the high jump (4' 9.5”) and sophomore Erin Sills (Smithtown) in the long jump (16' 0.25”).
