CORTLAND, N.Y. - Senior
Kayla Chambers (Craryville/Taconic Hills) scored the game's only goal in the second half to lead the nationally 10th-ranked Cortland field hockey team to a 1-0 win versus Hartwick Wednesday afternoon at the SUNY Cortland Stadium Complex. The Red Dragons improved to 3-1 with the win, while the Hawks fell to 1-4.
The game was scoreless at the half due to the effort of Hartwick sophomore goalie Mackenzie Chapman (Niskayuna), who turned aside seven shots in the opening 35 minutes, many on deflections in front and a defensive save from senior Lindsay Kurtz (Sherburne/Sherburne-Earlville). The Red Dragons finally broke through nine minutes, 53 seconds into the second half. Sophomore
Brenda Semit (Holland Patent) took a shot in close that Chapman saved, but Chambers was alone on the left side and tucked a low shot into the cage for her fourth goal of the season.
Cortland pressured throughout the second half, but Chapman denied the Red Dragons the remainder of the game. The Hawks pressed for the tie late, earning possession time in Cortland's end but couldn't generate a quality scoring chance.
Cortland senior goalie
Stacy Billings (Marathon) made one save in the game, and Chapman finished with 13 stops. The Red Dragons outshot the Hawks, 21-2 and held an 11-4 advantage in penalty corners.
