Dan MacNeill moved into second place on Cortland's career win chart with his 71st victory
GLASSBORO, N.J. - Senior tailback
Andrew Giuliano (Thornwood/Westlake) rushed for 136 yards and two touchdowns and sophomore
Anthony Giuliano (Thornwood/Westlake), Andrew's brother, caught five passes for 122 yards as nationally 20th-ranked Cortland defeated host Rowan, 27-20, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) contest. The Red Dragons improved to 2-0 both overall and in league play. Rowan is 1-1 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
The victory is the 71st in head coach
Dan MacNeill's 12-year career at Cortland, moving him into second place on the school's all-time win list. He is 71-44 overall, one win better than Roger Robinson's 70 victories (70-77-3) from 1963-79. As a player, MacNeill was coached by Robinson from 1975-78. Cortland's career win leader, Carl "Chugger" Davis, had a 105-67-17 record between 1932-62.
The win is also Cortland's first in Glassboro since 1964. The Red Dragons had lost their last six road games versus Rowan, all since 1996.
Cortland took a 27-7 lead after three quarters and held off a late charge by the host Profs.
Andrew Giuliano's 39-yard touchdown run gave the Red Dragons a 7-0 lead with 4:16 left in the first quarter.
Jeffrey Lang (Dryden) made a 33-yard field goal in the final minute of the quarter on a scoring drive set up by a
Josh Jablonski (West Seneca/West Seneca West)) interception.
Ray Miles (Port Byron) threw a 29-yard scoring pass to
Eric Hajnos (Grand Island) with 11:39 left in the first half. Miles finished 12-of-20 passing for 220 yards and a touchdown, with Hajnos making four catches for 81 yards.
Rowan responded with a 7-play, 73-yard scoring drive capped by quarterback Frank Wilczynski's 13-yard touchdown run and the Profs trailed 17-7 at halftime.
One of the big turning points in the contest came midway through the third quarter. Rowan drove deep into Cortland terrritory and eventually faced a 4th-and-goal at the 1-yard line. Wilczynski tried to score on a keeper, but was stopped by Jablonski and
Lou Crispo (Eastchester). On the ensuing play from scrimmage, Miles connected on an 81-yard bomb to
Anthony Giuliano, with Rowan's Jimmy DiPaolo making a touchdown-saving tackle at the Rowan 18-yard line. The play matched the second-longest pass play in school history. The drive eventually resulted in a Lang 20-yard field goal and Cortland led 20-7 with 3:20 left in the quarter.
On Rowan's next possession, Cortland safety
Chris Hanlon (Patchogue/Patchogue-Medford) forced a fumble after a reception by Stephen Hevalow and Jablonski returned the fumble 19 yards to the Rowan 8-yard line.
Andrew Giuliano followed with two 4-yard runs, the latter finding the end zone with 1:27 left in the third to extend the lead to 27-7.
Rowan held Cortland on a fourth-down attempt near midfield early in the fourth quarter and covered 51 yards on just three plays, capped by a Wilczynski 8-yard touchdown run with 10:59 remaining. The extra point, however, was blocked by Cortland's
Richard Rolo (Yonkers/Gorton) and Rowan trailed 27-13.
The Profs' last scoring drive started on their own 23-yard line with 2:57 left. They traveled 77 yards on 11 plays, including 39 Wilczynski rushing yards and a 17-yard scoring pass to Davon Edwards with 45 seconds left that made the score 27-20. Cortland recovered an onsides kickoff, however, and was able to run out the clock.
Jim Smith (Nanuet) led Cortland's defense with 11 tackles, 3.5 for lost yardage, and a pass breakup.
Ben Nagle (Rochester/Aquinas Institute) recorded nine stops, two for losses, and Jablonski recorded eight tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery.
Wilczynski completed 14-of-27 passes for 176 yards and finished with 66 net rushing yards on 17 carries. Drew Yezzi and Kevin Taylor each made nine tackles for the Profs.
Cortland travels to Kean next Saturday, Sept. 27, at 1 p.m.
