Chambers and Spehler Each Score Twice in 6-1 Win at Hamilton

Senior Sam Spehler scored Cortland's first and last goals
CLINTON, N.Y. – Senior Kayla Chambers (Craryville/Taconic Hills) recorded two goals and an assist and senior Sam Spehler (Sag Harbor/Pierson) tallied a pair of goals to lead the nationally 10th-ranked Cortland field hockey team to a 6-1 non-conference win at Hamilton on Saturday. The Red Dragons improved to 4-1 with the victory, and the Continentals fell to 1-2.

For Cortland, junior Kylie Burghardt (Lisle/Whitney Point) added a goal and an assist and sophomore Brenda Semit (Holland Patent) contributed a goal. Senior goalie Stacy Billings (Marathon) stopped two shots in 66 minutes before giving way to freshman Emily Gunner (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa), who did not need to register a save over the final four minutes in her first collegiate action.

Freshman Mary Lancaster tallied Hamilton's lone goal assisted by freshman Erin McNally. Junior goalie Courtney DeMaria made 11 saves.

Cortland took control of the game with a five-goal first half. Spehler opened the scoring at five minutes, 13 seconds when she converted a penalty corner, one of 14 for the Red Dragons in the game. Chambers made it 2-0 when she knocked in a rebound at 16:15 after a save by DeMaria. Burghardt scored on a penalty stroke at 19:30, and Chambers scored her second of the game and team-high sixth of the season at 24:51 for a 4-0 lead. Semit finished the scoring in the opening half when a Hamilton defender batted her shot into the cage.

In the second half, Spehler collected her second score of the game at 51:12, putting another rebound past DeMaria. The Continentals denied the shutout bid when Lancaster scored on a scramble in front with 8:07 left to play.
