Red Dragons Rally to Tie Buffalo St., 6-6

Freshman Ryan Durocher scored the game-tying goal late in the third period
CORTLAND, N.Y. - Sophomore Jarrett Gold (East Setauket/NY Bobcats) and freshman Ryan Durocher (Canton/Boston Bulldogs) scored goals less than a minute apart late in the third period as the Cortland men's hockey team earned a come-from-behind 6-6 tie versus Buffalo St. Friday night in SUNYAC action.

Gold finished the game with a goal and two assists, junior Patrick Palmisano (Ann Arbor, MI/Bay State Breakers) had a goal and an assist and Durocher, sophomores Joe Leonard (Lake Placid/Amherst Jr. Ramblers) and Justin Porpora (Hauppauge/NY Bobcats) and freshman Joey Christiano (Rochester/Port Hope Predators) each scored a goal. Senior Mike Maier (Rochester/Niagara University) collected four assists and junior Gerard Heinz (Kings Park/NY Apple Core) recorded two assists. Sophomore goalie Dan Jewell (Medford/National Sports Academy) stopped 28 shots, including all eight he faced in overtime.

Sophomore Joel Sheppard (Pefferlaw/ON/Stoufville Spirit) netted a hat trick to lead the Bengals. Senior Travis Whitehead (Cambridge, ON/Wisconsin-Superior) had a goal and an assist and senior Joe Curry (Indian River, ON/Port Colborne Sailors) and junior Ryan Ramage (Ft. Erie, ON/Brampton Capitals) each tallied a goal. Senior Jason Hill (Niagara Falls/Welland Jr. Canadiens) registered four assists, while sophomore Nick Petriello (St. Catharines, ON/St. Catharines Falcons) picked up two assists. Freshman goalie Alan Fritch (Saginaw, MI/Hudson Valley Eagles) made 33 saves.

Buffalo St. (8-9-3, 3-5-3 SUNYAC) opened a lead just 16 seconds into the game when Curry scored on a wrist shot from the left face-off circle on a rush. Porpora tied the game with a screen shot from the right point on the power play at 11 minutes, 54 seconds of the period. Ramage made it 2-1 for the Bengals with a slap shot from the right point at 13:46, but Leonard tied the score at 19:39 with a slapper from the right point.

Cortland (6-11-2, 3-5-2) took a 3-2 lead at 7:08 of the second period on a strange play. After Buffalo St. was whistled for a penalty, Fritch mistakenly started to skate off the ice while the Red Dragons possessed the puck. With Fritch near his bench, Christiano fired a shot into the open goal. The Bengals, however, responded with three goals in three and half minutes to close out the second period with a 5-3 lead. Whitehead tied the score with a deflection in front at 10:32. Sheppard then scored back-to-back power-play goals in front at 12:20 and 14:07.

Palmisano pulled the Red Dragons to within 5-4 at 4:38 of the third with a wrist shot from the right side. Sheppard completed his hat trick at 11:18 when he converted a breakaway and the Bengals led 6-4. Cortland battled back to 6-5 as Gold knocked in a rebound at 16:26, then at 17:07, Durocher one-timed a pass from Markell in the slot to knot the game up. The Red Dragons nearly ended the game in regulation, but a possible goal right at the buzzer was waved off. In overtime, Jewell was sharp as he stopped eight shots, including a sprawling save early in the extra session.
