BETHLEHEM, PA. – The Cortland men's cross country team was the top Division III finisher and placed 12th overall out of 42 schools, including 32 Division I teams, in the Gold Division of the Lehigh University Paul Short Run.
Cortland, ranked third nationally in Division III, finished with a total of 442 points. Indiana University won with 44 points, followed by Iona (55) and North Carolina State (87). Some of the schools Cortland defeated included Penn, Army, Richmond, Temple, Princeton, Delaware, Pittsburgh, Wake Forest, Maryland and Villanova, along with ranked Division III schools Allegheny (fifth), Dickinson (ninth), St. Lawrence (11th), Haverford (21st) and Plattsburgh (28th).
Senior
Seth DuBois (Altamont/Guilderland) finished in 57th place out of 386 runners with a time of 24 minutes, 39 seconds over 8,000 meters. N.C. State's Ryan Hill won the race in 23:40. Freshman
Sean Curry (Syracuse/Bishop Ludden) placed 63rd (24:41) and senior
Justin Wager (Guilderland) finished 85th (24:50).
Three other Red Dragons placed in the top 200. Senior
Eric Stermer (Chenango Forks) finished in 101st place (24:58), senior
Jerry Greenlaw (Warwick/Warwick Valley) was 145th (25:15) and senior
Kyle O'Brien (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) finished 194th (25:29).
Junior
Jared Newell (Queensbury) rounded out Cortland's top seven with a 226th-place time of 25:36. Freshman
Matt Knott (Smithtown) finished 253rd (25:49), junior
Brendan Brethel (Lynbrook) was 339th (26:28) and freshman
Brent Pavlick (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) crossed the finish line 358th (26:54).
Eight additional Cortland runners competed in the men's JV race. Junior
Andrew Brusso (Elmira/Southside) was the team's top finisher in 54th place out of 405 runners in 26:02, followed by freshman Patrick Fannon (West Islip) in 100th place (26:28).
Cortland will host the first-ever Dr. Jack Daniels Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 10. The women's race will start at 11 a.m. and the men's race is at noon. Daniels coached Cortland's men's team for 17 seasons in a 19-year span from 1986-2004 and the women's team for 16 years in an 18-year span from 1987-2004. He is scheduled to return to campus on Oct. 30 when Cortland celebrates its seven NCAA Div. III women's championship teams that he coached (1989, 90, 92, 93, 94, 95, 97).
