CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland women's soccer team scored two first-half goals in cold and rainy conditions and defeated Potsdam, 2-0, in SUNYAC action Friday night at Holloway Field. The Red Dragons improved to 8-1 overall and 2-0 in the conference, and the Bears fell to 6-3-1 and 0-3-1.
For Cortland, junior
Carly Williams (Emerson, NJ) and freshman
Taylor Teal (Bethlehem) each scored a goal. Junior
Maura Martin (Chili/Gates-Chili) and freshman
Brittni Lionarons (Averill Park) collected one assist each. Junior goalies
Pam Monnier (East Northport/Northport) and

Senior goalie Sarah Casey (Potsdam) stopped 13 shots for Potsdam.
Williams put Cortland on the scoreboard in the eighth minute with her third goal of the season. Martin booted a long free kick that bounced into the box, and Casey charged out to play the ball but it slipped through her hands. Williams ran onto the ball and steered it into the open net. Teal made it a 2-0 game three minutes before halftime. Lionarons fed a pass from the right side to the top of the box where Teal struck a left-footed shot that deflected off Casey's hands and inside the left post for her third score of the season.
In the 48th minute, the Bears had an excellent chance to make it a one-goal game. Monnier charged off her line and dove on a loose ball, but the ball squirted out from underneath her and right to sophomore Jess Mehm (Schroon Lake), whose shot went wide right of the open goal.
Casey kept the Bears in the game with several key saves through the first and second halves as Cortland out shot Potsdam, 28-2, and had a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks.
