ONEONTA, N.Y. – Freshman
Stacey Wood (New Hyde Park) scored the tiebreaking goal two minutes and 49 seconds into the second half as Cortland defeated SUNYAC co-leader Oneonta, 2-1.
The victory is Cortland's first over Oneonta since a 1-0 win in 1995. The Red Dragons were 0-18-2 in their last 20 games versus Oneonta, with 0-0 ties in both the 2007 and 1998 seasons.
Cortland is now 10-4-1 overall and moves into a three-way tie for fourth place in the conference at 4-3-1. Oneonta is 10-3-3 overall and 6-2 in the league. Cortland has clinched a berth in the league's six-team postseason tournament. The third and fourth-place teams will host the sixth and fifth-place teams, respectively, in quarterfinal games Oct. 31.
Wood's game-winning goal, assisted by sophomore
Bridgette DeSantis (Schenectady/Mohonasen), came after a the teams fought for a loose ball in the box. Oneonta grabbed a 1-0 lead 5:26 into the game on a goal by Caitlin Burke off a Nha Wright corner kick. Cortland, however, tied the game with just 17 seconds left in the half. Junior
Maura Martin (Chili/Gates-Chili) booted a direct kick that deflected off the hands of Oneonta goalie Jamie Chyat, bounced off the crossbar and went in.
Cortland junior goalie
Pam Monnier (East Northport/Northport) and Chyat each finished the game with two saves. Oneonta's best chance to tie the game came with just eight seconds left when Melissa VandenBergh's shot hit the post. The hosts also had an apparent game-tying goal waived off due an offsides call in the 72nd minute.
Cortland concludes its SUNYAC regular season schedule Saturady at New Paltz at 1 p.m. The Red Dragons are tied in the league standings with Geneseo, which plays at Fredonia Saturday evening, and Buffalo State, which hosts Brockport Saturday afternoon.
