Evans, VanSickle Help Red Dragons Win Cortland Sprint Relays

Caleb VanSickle swam on three winning relays
CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland won seven races and finished in first place out of three schools at the season-opening Cortland Sprint Relays. The Red Dragons finished with 429 points, followed by Clarkson with 356 and Fredonia with 326.

Senior Dan Evans (Hamburg) was on four winning relays, followed by senior Caleb VanSickle (Stanley/Marcus Whitman) on three winning entries. These totals do not include the 8x25-yard freestyle relay.

Sophomore Dan Drew (Farmington/Victor), sophomore Daniel Salvatore (Clarence), sophomore Dylan Scheemaker (Fairport) and Evans teamed to win the 400-yard medley relay (3:48.51). Freshman Ben Strickland (Stanfordville/home schooled), senior Matt Young (Schoharie) and freshman Justin Nelson (Jamestown/Frewsburg) won the 300-yard backstroke relay (2:51.84), while Strickland, freshman Sean Iles (Theresa/Indian River) and freshman Dan MacQuarrie (Vestal) captured the 300-yard breaststroke relay (3:19.65).

Evans, Scheemaker, VanSickle and junior James McCabe (North Massapequa/Farmingdale) won the 200-yard freesytle relay (1:29.99). Junior Dan Caputo (Staten Island/Curtis), VanSickle and Evans won the 300-yard medley relay (2:58.33) and VanSickle, McCabe, Salvatore and Evans took top honors in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:27.60). In addition, Young, MacQuarrie, senior Jeff Moessinger (Elma/Iroquois) and freshman Dan Maximowicz (Binghamton/Chenango Forks) won the 200-yard medley relay (1:43.71).
