Cortland Closes SUNYAC Slate with 0-0 Tie at New Paltz

Junior Pam Monnier earned her sixth shutout of the season
NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – For the third time since 2004, the Cortland women's soccer team played to a 0-0 double-overtime tie at New Paltz in SUNYAC action. The Red Dragons completed their conference schedule with a 4-3-2 mark and their overall record stands at 10-4-2. Cortland's tie, combined with Buffalo State's win versus Brockport and Geneseo's tie versus Fredonia, makes the Red Dragons the sixth seed for the SUNYAC tournament. Cortland will play at Brockport on Saturday, Oct. 31, in the quarterfinals.

For Cortland, junior goalie Pam Monnier (East Northport/Northport) stopped three shots to record her sixth shutout of the season. Danielle Gura made nine saves for New Paltz (4-8-5, 1-6-2 SUNYAC).

Cortland had two good chances to score in the 11th and 17th minutes, but junior Casey Reinhardt's (Hilton) shot sailed just over the crossbar after a New Paltz turnover and Gura made a save on junior Carly Williams' (Emerson, NJ) header.

Twelve minutes into the second half, Monnier kept the game scoreless when she made a leaping save on Shannon Cobb's shot that was headed for the upper right corner. In the 65th minute, Gura denied sophomore Jackie De Luise's (Guilderland) bid with a diving save. Each team had a good chance in the closing minutes of regulation. In the 86th minute, Cortland sophomore Jordan Miller (Liverpool) labeled a shot for the left corner, but Gura made the save. A minute later, New Paltz's Brittany Bennett sent a 35-yard free kick barely over the crossbar.

In the first overtime, Cortland had the best chance to grab the win. With 20 seconds remaining, sophomore Bridgette DeSantis (Schenectady/Mohonasen) caromed a shot off the crossbar from the right side. With less than five minutes remaining in the second overtime, Cortland freshman Jenn Fox (New Hyde Park) had a chance to score the game winner but hit the left post while shooting at an open net from in close.
