CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland women's soccer team scored a pair of first-half goals and held on for a 2-1 win versus visiting Wilkes University in its regular-season finale Tuesday afternoon at Holloway Field. The Red Dragons improved to 11-4-2 with the win, while the Lady Colonels fell to 6-8-3.
Sophomore
Bridgette DeSantis (Schenectady/Mohonasen) and freshman
Jenn Fox (New Hyde Park) each tallied a goal for Cortland. Freshman
Stacey Wood (New Hyde Park) and junior
Maura Martin (Chili/Gates-Chili) recorded one assist each, and junior goalie
Dayna Moneta (Franklin Square/Valley Stream North) made three saves.
For Wilkes, freshman Erin Donnelly (Parkesburg, PA/Octorara) scored a goal and sophomore Katy Fissel (Madison, NJ) collected an assist. Freshman goalie Brooke Keister (Penns Creek, PA/Midd-West) played the first half and did not register a save before giving way to sophomore Sara Shetler (Pequea, PA/Penn Manor), who stopped three shots over the final 45 minutes.
DeSantis opened the scoring in the 28th minute with her team-high seventh goal of the season off Wood's assist. DeSantis possessed the ball 30 yards out and sent a high shot just under the crossbar. In the 36th minute, Fox scored her first career goal on a high 20-yard shot from the right side of the box and Cortland led 2-0 at the half.
Wilkes had two excellent chances to score after corner kicks early in the first half. In the 48th minute, Wilkes freshman Brooke Edwards (Levittown, PA/Harry S. Truman) one-timed a 25-yard shot that Moneta punched over the crossbar. On the ensuing corner kick, Donnelly took a shot in close that Cortland sophomore
Jennifer Cadolino (Massapequa) blocked at the left post.
The Red Dragons nearly took a 3-0 lead in the 72nd minute, but freshman Paige Giudice (Greece/Greece Athena) sent an open eight-yard shot over the top. The Lady Colonels made it a one-goal game in the 81st minute. Fissel put a free kick from the right side into the box and the ball bounced to the left post where Donnelly touched the loose ball into the net for her first career goal. Cortland's defense stiffened in the final minutes and held Wilkes without a quality chance the remainder of the game.
The Red Dragons travel to Brockport on Saturday for a SUNYAC Tournament quarterfinal game at 1 p.m.
